The Future of Indian Employment in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
When machines become clever, what will happen to the people who work beside them?
There was a time when a young Indian graduate believed that a degree was the beginning and the end of a career. A degree in engineering could lead to a job in a technology company; a degree in commerce could lead to banking or accounting; a teaching qualification could lead to a school. The path was reasonably clear.
Today, the path looks different.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is entering offices, factories, hospitals, farms, classrooms and even small businesses. It can write computer programs, analyse documents, translate languages, identify patterns in medical images and answer customer queries. Generative AI has made this change even more visible.
Naturally, a young person may ask: “If a machine can do my work, where will I find my place?”
The answer is not simply that AI will destroy jobs, nor is it that AI will create unlimited opportunities. The truth lies somewhere in between. The future of Indian employment will depend greatly on how workers, educational institutions, businesses and governments respond to the technology.
India stands at an important crossroads
India has a large young workforce and an enormous technology ecosystem. This gives the country an advantage, but it also creates a responsibility.
NITI Aayog's Roadmap for Job Creation in the AI Economy presents a striking possibility. Depending on how India responds to AI, the technology sector could face significant job displacement by 2031—or expand considerably through AI-enabled employment. The report identifies opportunities ranging from enterprise AI roles to advanced AI research and frontier technology occupations.
This tells us something important: AI itself is not destiny. Our choices matter.
The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 similarly estimates that global labour-market transformation could create 170 million jobs and displace 92 million by 2030, producing a net increase of 78 million jobs. Technology and AI-related occupations are among the fastest-growing, but so are several roles involving care, education and other essential human activities.
Therefore, the question should not be, “Will AI take away our jobs?”
A better question is:
“Which parts of our work will AI change, and what new capabilities will human beings need?”
1. The job will change before the job disappears
Consider an accountant.
Earlier, an accountant might spend considerable time entering information, preparing routine reports and checking large amounts of data. AI can increasingly assist with such repetitive activities.
But an organisation still needs someone who can understand the business, identify an unusual transaction, explain financial implications to a client and make an ethical decision.
The accountant's work has therefore not necessarily disappeared. The composition of the work has changed.
This distinction is crucial.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) notes that AI is more likely in many occupations to augment human capabilities and improve productivity rather than simply automate entire occupations. At the same time, some occupations and groups of workers face greater exposure to transformative effects.
This means that future employment will increasingly be organised around human beings working with intelligent machines.
The successful employee may not be the person who knows everything.
It may be the person who knows what to ask the machine, how to check its answer and when not to trust it.
2. AI literacy will become as important as computer literacy
A generation ago, knowing how to use a computer was a major advantage. Later, knowing how to use the internet became essential.
AI literacy is likely to follow a similar path.
A graduate entering the workforce may increasingly be expected to understand:
how generative AI tools work;
how to formulate effective prompts;
how to verify AI-generated information;
how to work with data;
how to recognise bias and errors;
how to protect confidential information; and
how to use AI responsibly.
However, AI literacy should not mean teaching every student to become an AI engineer.
A schoolteacher, lawyer, nurse, architect, farmer, journalist and entrepreneur may all use AI differently.
The important principle is “AI for the profession,” rather than simply “AI as a profession.”
NITI Aayog has similarly recommended embedding AI education into curricula and creating a national reskilling and upskilling mechanism.
3. The greatest demand may be for people with two kinds of knowledge
The Indian employment market has traditionally encouraged specialisation.
A student might say, “I am a mechanical engineer,” or “I am a finance professional.”
The future may increasingly reward a combination:
domain knowledge + AI capability.
Imagine a doctor who understands AI-assisted diagnostics.
Imagine an agricultural scientist who combines traditional agricultural knowledge with satellite data and predictive models.
Imagine a lawyer who understands both law and AI-assisted document analysis.
Imagine a teacher who uses AI to personalise learning while retaining the ability to understand a child's emotional and educational needs.
These combinations can become powerful.
The World Economic Forum's India analysis identifies AI and machine-learning specialists, big-data specialists and security-management specialists among India's fastest-growing roles, while also highlighting the increasing importance of skills-based hiring.
The future employee, therefore, may not be simply a “technology worker.”
The future employee may be a teacher + technologist, doctor + data user, farmer + digital entrepreneur, or designer + AI practitioner.
4. Human qualities will become more—not less—valuable
There is an interesting paradox here.
The more intelligent machines become, the more valuable certain human qualities may become.
A machine can generate ten versions of an email in seconds. But can it understand why a particular sentence might hurt a grieving colleague?
A machine can analyse thousands of documents. But should it decide what is morally right?
A machine can produce an answer. But who should take responsibility when the answer is wrong?
This is where qualities such as empathy, judgement, creativity, communication, collaboration, curiosity and ethical reasoning become important.
The ILO's recent work on skills in the age of AI highlights growing demand for cognitive, socio-emotional, digital and AI skills, while emphasising adaptability, resilience, AI literacy and human agency.
Thus, education cannot become a race to produce students who merely operate machines.
We must produce thinking human beings who know how to use machines wisely.
5. India's informal workforce must not be forgotten
When we discuss AI and employment, our conversation often begins and ends with software engineers.
But India is much larger than its IT sector.
Millions of Indians work in agriculture, construction, retail, transportation, domestic services, handicrafts and other informal occupations. NITI Aayog has specifically highlighted the potential of AI to support India's vast informal workforce rather than limiting the AI discussion to white-collar professionals.
Imagine a small farmer receiving better weather and crop information through a local-language AI system.
Imagine a carpenter using digital tools to estimate material requirements.
Imagine a small shopkeeper using AI to understand inventory and demand.
Imagine an artisan reaching customers across India through digital platforms.
These may not sound like futuristic jobs. That is precisely the point.
The future of employment will not arrive in India in one uniform form.
It will arrive differently in Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, Coimbatore, Jaipur and thousands of villages.
6. The classroom must change
Perhaps the greatest employment policy of the AI era is not an employment policy at all.
It is education policy.
India cannot prepare young people for 2035 using only the assumptions of 1995.
Students must learn to ask questions, solve unfamiliar problems, work in teams, communicate clearly and learn continuously.
Universities will also need stronger connections with industry. Apprenticeships, internships, practical projects and skills-based assessments can help bridge the distance between classroom knowledge and workplace requirements.
The World Economic Forum reports that Indian employers increasingly expect to draw from more diverse talent pools and are also considering skills-based hiring and alternatives to traditional degree requirements.
This could be a welcome development.
A young person from a small town should not be excluded simply because she did not attend an elite institution if she can demonstrate the skills required for the job.
AI may therefore create an unexpected opportunity: to make employment more skills-based.
But this will happen only if India builds reliable ways of teaching, assessing and recognising those skills.
7. Continuous learning will become a career habit
Earlier, people sometimes thought of education as something completed in one's twenties.
The AI economy will make that idea increasingly difficult to sustain.
A person may graduate in 2028 with excellent knowledge of a particular technology, only to find that the technology has changed substantially a few years later.
This does not mean everyone must constantly chase every new technological trend.
Rather, workers must develop the ability to learn, unlearn and relearn.
NITI Aayog's recent work on skilling for Viksit Bharat emphasises that AI, automation, the green transition and changing global supply chains are simultaneously creating new categories of work and making some existing skills obsolete. It argues that skilling should be treated as a foundational national priority.
This is especially important for workers in mid-career.
A 45-year-old employee should not be told, “Your technology is outdated; start again.”
Instead, the system should ask:
“What experience does this person already possess, and how can new technology multiply its value?”
8. New jobs will emerge that we cannot fully name today
Whenever a major technology arrives, people initially try to fit it into existing job categories.
The automobile created professions that did not exist in the horse-and-carriage era. The internet created web developers, cybersecurity specialists and digital marketers.
AI will do something similar.
NITI Aayog identifies emerging roles such as AI architects, prompt engineers and AIOps engineers, while also pointing towards frontier roles combining AI with areas such as quantum technologies and advanced human-machine interfaces.
Some of today's children may eventually enter occupations whose names we do not yet know.
That should not frighten us.
It should remind us that education should teach adaptability rather than merely train people for a fixed list of occupations.
9. But the transition will not be painless
It would be irresponsible to present AI only as a story of opportunity.
Some routine jobs will shrink.
Some workers will require retraining.
Some companies may adopt AI faster than educational institutions can respond.
There may also be inequalities between workers who have access to good digital infrastructure and those who do not.
The ILO's research shows that the effects of generative AI vary considerably across occupations and groups, making the transition a question not only of productivity but also of job quality and inclusion.
Therefore, India's AI strategy must include a strong social dimension.
Workers who are displaced should have access to retraining.
Small businesses should not be left behind.
Women and workers from disadvantaged regions should have genuine access to digital opportunities.
And employees should have protections concerning privacy, algorithmic decision-making and responsible use of AI.
10. What should India do?
The road ahead requires cooperation among government, industry, educational institutions and workers.
For the government
India should strengthen digital infrastructure, support lifelong learning, create accessible reskilling programmes and develop clear frameworks for responsible AI adoption.
For universities and school.
Curricula should combine technical understanding with communication, critical thinking, ethics and practical experience.
For employers
Companies should not view AI merely as a cost-cutting instrument. They should invest in redesigning jobs and helping existing employees transition into new roles.
For workers
The most important investment is in oneself.
Learn AI.
Understand your profession deeply.
Develop communication and analytical abilities.
Keep learning.
And, perhaps most importantly, do not surrender your judgement to a machine.
The human being must remain at the centre
There is a small lesson from Indian family life that may be useful here.
When a new washing machine enters a household, we do not throw away the family member who previously washed clothes. The machine changes the work. It may make it faster and easier. But decisions about the household remain human decisions.
AI is far more powerful than a washing machine, of course. Yet the underlying principle remains useful.
Technology should serve human beings, not make human beings servants of technology.
India's future employment story will therefore not be written by algorithms alone.
It will be written by millions of young people learning new skills, by experienced workers adapting to new tools, by teachers changing classrooms, by entrepreneurs creating new businesses and by policymakers ensuring that technological progress does not leave people behind.
The most successful Indian worker of the future may not be the person who competes with AI.
It may be the person who learns to work with AI while bringing something to the table that a machine cannot easily provide: wisdom, responsibility, empathy and human judgement.
And perhaps that is the most reassuring thought of all.
The future of work may be powered by machines, but the future of employment must still be designed around people.
